Nigerian cook who survived three days in a shipwreck

Nigeria’s WARRI — Harrison Odjegba Okene appeared to be on the verge of rescue after surviving three days in an upside-down tugboat at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. The cook squatted in an air pocket as air bubbles rose all around him. A diver was on the way. He observed lights in the ocean

But afterwards, the lights went out. Okene desperately swam in the sunken boat across the pitch-black sea to reach the diver. When Okene couldn’t locate him and his lungs started to fail, he swam back to the cabin where his last, precious pocket of air was stored.

Okene spoke exclusively with The Associated Press about his struggle and miraculous rescue, which was captured on camera and went viral this month after being posted online.

The 29-year-old still experiences nightmares and swears she will never go near the water again. Instead, he accepted a new position as a cook on solid ground.

When the boat capsized in May, Okene was the lone survivor out of a crew of 12. He’s still troubled by it. In addition to suffering from survivor’s guilt, several Nigerians think he was saved by black magic.

At a depth of roughly 100 feet, the Jascon 4 was lying upside down on the ocean floor (30 meters).

The obese cook just drank one bottle of Coke to stay alive. After less than a day, he discovered two flashlights that had failed. After three days in the dark, he had all but given up hope when he suddenly heard a boat and a hammering on the side of the vessel. After some time, he saw lights and the bubbling waters around him rose.

He claimed he was on the wrong end of the cabin but knew it had to be a diver.

He entered, but because he moved too quickly, I noticed the light, but before I could reach him, he had left. In the dead of night, I tried to follow him, but I couldn’t find him.

When they found Okene, his rescuers from the Dutch company DCN Diving were solely looking for dead and had already found four.

Okene had to swim again to get to the diver when he came back, but he was still unable to see him. I then gave him a tap on the back of the neck, which made him fearful. When the diver noticed his hand, he reported up to the rescue vessel while saying “corpse, corpse, a corpse” via his microphone.

I pulled on his hand when he drew it toward me, Okene recalled.

“He’s alive! He’s alive! He’s alive!” Okene can recall hearing.

After the diver surfaced into the air pocket, Okene recounted a bizarre scenario.

He told the AP last Thursday, “I knew when he gave me water he was watching me (to check) whether I’m truly human.

After warming him up with hot water, the diver fastened him to an oxygen mask. After being rescued from the sunken boat, he spent 60 hours in a decompression chamber before being allowed to safely ascend to the surface.

Okene assumed his teammates had fled until he was saved. The tug was one of three pulling a Chevron oil tanker through the oil-rich Delta waterways of Nigeria when, on May 26, it suddenly lurched and capsized.

Okene added, “I couldn’t go because I didn’t know what the family would think, wondering why he was the only one to live.

His unwavering trust has been swayed by this query. “I question God every week, “Why only me? Why did my colleagues have to die?”‘

His 27-year-old wife Akpovona Okene claimed he continues to have nightmares. “He has that shock while he is sleeping, and he will just wake up in the middle of the night and scream, ‘Honey see, the bed is sinking, we are in the water.'”

When Okene was at the bottom of the ocean, he reportedly made a deal with God: “If you rescue me, I will never go back to the sea again, never.”

Intel from a reliable source stated that a 48 year old Ghanaian businessman, Newton Kwaku Boateng, who is based in South Africa has been allegedly poisoned to death by his South African wife in SA a week ago.

Mr. Newton who recently had scuffles with his wife had reported her to his family in Ghana, and even threatened divorce. Suspecting foul play, Boateng’s family have expressed their displeasure and despair at the death of their relative. They believe without doubt that indeed, their relative was poisoned by his wife.

Mr. Godwin Attipoe who spoke on behalf of Newton’s Family in Ghana said “We are so devastated. We are so angry. We are so heartbroken.”

He hinted that after the death of the beloved brother, a case of inquest was opened in Kempton Park, South African Police Service in Gauteng Province, South Africa, adding that “Kempton Park is a City which is based in Gauteng Province”.

Godwin Attipoe claimed they suspect corruption and cover up of the murder of Newton Kwaku Boateng by Kempton Park police station which he claimed is working closely with the wife of the deceased Alinah Mahlangu. Why? Their inquest for an autopsy be done on the victim is being denied by the police service in SA.

An emotional Godwin had to pause speaking as he started weeping, triggering cries among his other family members who were with him.
He further revealed that South African police say they are investigating and awaiting autopsy results after the body with foam in his mouth was found.

He however said “We are giving the South Africa police the authority and power of attorney to order an autopsy on Newton Boateng who died on March 2, 2023”.

He appealed to the Ghana Embassy in South Africa to assist the family to supervise the autopsy on the deceased, which his wife is resisting, adding that the wife of the deceased has not been authorized to represent the family on the issue.

More developing on the issue. Watch this space.
