A lady faces jail over ‘indecent clothing’
A young woman from Rwanda was jailed and brought before a court for wearing ‘indecent’ clothing after a picture of her wearing fishnets to a concert.
The 24-year-old may spend up to two years in prison if found guilty.
She was denied bail on Thursday by the Kigali-based Kicukiro Primary court, with the prosecution asking that she be held without pay for 30 days while the inquiry is ongoing.
The case was discussed in private.
Article 143 of Rwanda’s Law Determining Offenses and Penalties states that “Anyone who conducts an indecent act in public shall be guilty of an offense.
After being found guilty, the offender faces a sentence of between six months and two years in jail.

On social media, the case has sparked widespread uproar, with many criticizing the government for violating women’s rights and others calling for “more appropriate wearing” in public.
A few days after declaring on national television that the Rwanda National Police is determined to reining in such impolite actions, the court case was filed.
In a tweet on his verified account, Busingye Johnston, the current Rwandan ambassador to Britain, criticized Liliane’s fashion choice and called it offensive.
He stated, “The current issue of our young people appearing in public literally naked after drinking and using drugs renders them unpleasant.”
Faustin Nkusi, a spokesman for the prosecution, claimed that the woman had committed a major offense by appearing “naked” in public while wearing a “shameful clothing.”
The Chronicles, a newspaper published in Rwanda, reports that the 24-year-old woman appeared in court on Thursday.
Since then, the police in Kigali have barred several women from entering public spaces and concerts because of their “inappropriate dressing.”
2020 saw the Rwanda Investigation Bureau parade three ladies in front of the media for sharing recordings of themselves being nude on Instagram.
They were given a 36-month prison sentence after being accused of allocating embarrassing footage concerning drug use and sex.

The two were detained for dressing up as police officers in a three-day-old TikTok video depicting an encounter between a cop and a driver.
Two people are shown arguing on the side of the side in the comedy scene.
As he encourages other drivers to park properly, one of them can be seen wearing a police uniform and getting into an argument with the other while speaking in pidgin English and twi. “Police officer in an open brawl with a driver,” read the caption on the video.
We would like to warn the public against behaviors that tend to harm reputations as the inquiry continues to determine the source of the attire and get the culprits ready to face justice.
