IMF team to visit Ghana from 26 September to 7 October

From September 26 to October 7, a staff delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Stéphane Roudet, mission leader for Ghana, will be in Accra to continue negotiations with the Ghanaian government about policies and reforms that could be financed by an IMF funding arrangement.

During the tour, IMF employees will also interact with other stakeholders further.

Between July 6 and July 13, 2022, a staff delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) led by Carlo Sdralevich visited Accra to assess the country’s economic situation and talk about the general framework of the government’s Enhanced Domestic Program that could be financed by an IMF lending arrangement.

Vice-President Bawumia, Finance Minister Ofori-Atta, and Governor Addison of the Bank of Ghana met with the IMF delegation (BoG).

In order to discuss social spending, the team also visited with the Finance Committee of the Parliament, nonprofits, and development agencies like UNICEF and the World Bank.

“Ghana is dealing with a severe economic and social situation in a challenging international climate. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a dramatic worsening of the financial and debt crisis.

Investors’ worries have also led to credit rating downgrades, capital outflows, a lack of access to external markets, and higher domestic borrowing rates, according to a statement from Sdralevich.

BoG reschedules MPC meeting

Prior to this, the BoG changed the date of its impending interest rate decision from 26 September to 7 October in order to coincide with the conclusion of an IMF mission to the nation.

“To allow the decision on the policy rate to benefit from the wider talks to be made during the term, the Bank of Ghana is rescheduling its 108th Monetary Policy Committee meeting to coincide with the end of the IMF mission. On October 7, 2022, a decision about the direction of monetary policy will be made public, according to a statement from the BoG.
