Azonto is a branded Ghanaian dance which became popular in late 2010 but evolved into a music genre around 2012 when the movement was popularized by the likes of Sarkodie, Gasmilla, Eduwordji, Fuse ODJ, etc. There has been debates on the issue of who brought the “Azonto” genre. Many are those who has chosen Gasmilla and many others opting for Sarkodie and others. The following information are some facts put together by ghvibe.com about the real origin of the “Azonto” genre.

The “Azonto” dance originated from traditional performers who danced and sang during theit performances in Accra since 2008. It was only recognized and made famous in 2010 when one of these bands had an erected and entertaining performance at TV3 Music Music in 2010.

Around the time, people got to know the dance better in Accra. People started dancing it in clubs, parties, etc. It then spread to the other parts of Ghana. It was around that time that Gasmilla brought out a song “Boodatoi”, to be a song that goes with the dance. Later the next year, Sarkodie’s song “You go kill me” solidified the claim of “Azontoship” as a music and dance  movements in the country. Then other musicians like Guru, Eduwordji, Stay Jay, Fuse ODJ, etc glorified and globalized it.
