“Most Ghanaian Producers Make Fake Amapiano Beats” – Music Critic Opines
Music Analyst and critic, Lionel has stated that most Ghanaian music producers make just anything and call it ‘Amapiano’. Speaking on Adom 106.3 FM’s Entertainment Hall with Obidombie Adu Kumi, Lionel explained that this has been so because most of these producers do not research excessively on different genres of music before experimenting them.
He furthered his claim by giving out the background of the Amapiano genre and specifications needed to call a song one.
The genre he said came from South Africa, and it dates back to 2005. It evolved from the traditional Kwaito music, through to Gqom, House and Barcadi music genres. The term ‘Amapiano’ is a Zulu word which means “The Pianos”, is mostly characterized by a one chord progression of a piano, coupled with synths, whistle sounds, airy pads and wild percussive basslines. The contemporary Amapiano genre is heavily armed by banging log drums and high or loud snares which was first introduced into the genre by Mdu/TRP, a South African producer.
The music analyst suggested that it will be worthwhile if Ghanaian producers use the traditional elements (tempo, instruments, drum patterns) in South African Amapiano (which is it’s original form) to the latter before they term their songs as a form of the genre. Either way is a distortion of the genre, and that they should desist from it. ”Better still they should find new names to call their fond hybrids”, he ended.
