PEOPLE’S FROM BAUXITE CONCESSION COMMUNITIES IN THE NYINAHIN BAUXITE DEPOSIT AREA ARE CALLING FOR IMMEDIATE MEETING WITH THE PRESIDENT

Published

We the people of the bauxite concession towns ( Kyirayaso, Kyekyewere and Mpasaaso) and the surrounding communities in the Tano-Offin forest reserve in the Ashanti Region on behalf of ourselves, and the inhabitants of these communities, whose interest we upholds wish to state that
we were happy about two years ago when the government of Ghana declared its intention to exploit the the bauxite on our soil. We have since been waiting for the government’s invitation to explain to us the detail arrangement about the project. Unfortunately no such invitation has been received. Our only option to monitor government’s timelines has been the media (electronic and print).

On the 3rd of March, 2019 they got an information running on Daily Graphic that Ghana Integrated Aluminium Corporation Board has been formed and inaugurated by His Excellency, the president of the republic without representation from any of the concession communities which we think is not right.

We therefore write to draw the attention of the government to make the necessary amendments in the constitution of the board which is predominantly people from outside the concession area as soon as possible before the commencement of the project. It is estimated that this project is going to cater for the country for the next two hundred years and beyond. This could lead to deprivation of our livelihood for both present and future generation. Hence any changes in contrast to what we have stated above will be resisted.

Under the current situation we further demand that;
1. The government should explain to us how the current as well as the future generation will benefit from the mining of the bauxite since it is going to affect our livelihood and family system forever.

2. The government should reconstitute the board and make sure that each of the concession towns are given a representation. Also the traditional and modern political leaders in the various catchment areas should also be represented on the board.

3.The government should hold a consultative meeting with us to satisfactorily deliberate on the project.
4. The deputy c.e.o of Ghana integrated aluminium developing corporation should known that our future is not for sale so his clandestine use of the name of the president, His excellency nana addo dankwa Akufo-Addo to organize meetings with our local chiefs in his hotel in Kumasi all in the bid to convince them to accept his selfish interest will amount to nothing.

5.The government should not rush to bring any company to come and start working on our land without addressing our concerns since such action will vehemently be resisted. We have made advanced consultations and preparation to petition the United Nations and other international human rights organizations should the government ignore our demands.
