Ghana’s music industry is poised for transformation as experts push for improved showbiz reporting and respectful terminology. At the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) 50th Anniversary celebration, Benjamin Oduro Arhin Jnr., Lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba’s Department of Music Education, and Bnoskka, Creative Arts Business and Intellectual Property Consultant, emphasized the need for industry education.

Benjamin Oduro Arhin Jnr., who also a champion of the American Music Mentorship Program and National Expert for UNESCO Aschberg Program-Ghana, stressed that showbiz on radio and television stations requires in-depth knowledge of the music industry.

“Showbiz reporters and presenters need to understand the nuances of the industry, including copyright laws, royalties, and artist management,” Arhin Jnr. explained. “This knowledge gap leads to misinformation and disrespect towards artists.”

Rethinking Terminology: From ‘Old Musician’ to ‘Catalogue Artist’ Bnoskka, Vice Chairman of MUSIGA Accra branch, echoed his expert call for change in terminology by advocating for the replacement of the term “old musician” with “Catalogue Artist.” Bnoskka calls for this change while delivering his solidarity message at MUSIGA at 50 Anniversary lunch on 7th November, 2024 at Accra Tourist Information Centre.

“This change in terminology will promote respect and recognition for experienced musicians, shifting the focus from age to their valuable contributions,” Bnoskka said.

MUSIGA’s President, Bessa Simon reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to industry growth and development.

According Bessa Simon MUSIGA president acknowledges “We appreciate the expertise and insights shared by Benjamin Oduro Arhin Jnr. and Bnoskka. We will continue to work towards creating a vibrant and respected music industry in Ghana.”

As Ghana’s music industry continues to evolve, the call for industry education, respectful terminology, and collaboration resonates loudly. By embracing change and fostering a culture of respect, Ghana’s music industry can thrive, benefiting both local and international artists.
