Transport fares to increase by 19% from Saturday – GPRTU
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced that, as of October 29, transportation costs will increase by 19%.
The recent increases in fuel prices, along with the raging inflation and the ongoing devaluation of the Cedi, are to blame for the increase, according to Godfred Abulbire, general secretary of the union.
He said that the Union will publish a statement later today to alert commuters of the most recent fare adjustments during an interview on the AM Show on Wednesday.

He claimed that following lengthy negotiations with President Akufo-Addo and other national transport companies, the Union had decided on the 19% increase.
Mr. Abulbire added that despite having justification for raising the price, his organization had heeded the President’s request to change the proposed 49%.
He explained the increase by saying, “An appropriate amount to ask for would have been approximately 49%. However, in light of the economic climate, we were forced to scale down to 25%, then to 20%, and finally to 1612% [from the Minister] yesterday.
After talking with him, the President declared that everything we were stating was true. And that he is aware of all that is there. But taking a closer look, the instant that prices increase, it [affects] a lot of things, he said.
The President asked us to reexamine our choice and see if we could accept the 16% that the Minister had provided, the GPRTU General Secretary said. But we asserted that this was actually problematic. The conference came to an end when everyone decided to accept a 19% reduction and take off 1%.
“We stated the 20% was just still something to think about… We consequently concurred and decided to waive that 1%. We’ll be releasing a communiqué today, and it will go into effect on this coming Saturday, October 29,” he continued.
The GPRTU’s raise comes when many Ghanaians are already feeling the effects of the system’s difficulty.
Many people are pleading with the government to take action right away to ease their suffering.
Martin Kpebu, a private attorney, has meantime urged people to turn out in large numbers for a protest against the Akufo-Addo government.
On November 5, at 7 am, a demonstration is scheduled at the Obra Spot in the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange (Circle).
The protest is intended to force President Akufo-Addo to step down from his position as head of state, the openly critical of the administration wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
He claims that the exercise will be a recreation of the famous 1995 “Kumi Pre Ko” march against the then-Rawlings administration, in which Akufo-Addo took the lead.
He asked people to support the initiative while expressing sympathy for a guy who allegedly committed himself at Kasoa Galilea as a result of the country’s economic hardship.
